About

Welcome to the Classic Stone Carver. My name is Tadek. I am a classically trained European stone carver and sculptor. From my workshop in Norman, Oklahoma, I specialize in hand-carved architectural stone, stone décor and public art. My work can be found in public spaces and private collections in Europe and the United States.

I am inspired by small details found in European architectural traditions, such as masks, human faces or other ornaments. I strive to create “light” and unexpected pieces that make people smile or wonder “what is that?” When carving faces, my aim is to convey the emotional worlds of humans expressed through carefully crafted detail and facial mimicry. Current pieces I am completing are narrative sculptures for gardens or parks that are slightly provocative and tinged with humor.

I am a direct stone carver, which means I rarely carve by copying models made from clay or plaster. Instead, I let myself be inspired by the stone. I take great pleasure in the surprise encounters that happen during the carving process. My imagination comes alive as I study how the stone responds to the chisels. The emerging shapes, light and shadows yield new possibilities and paths toward my initial idea for the project.

I carve with hand chisels as well as pneumatic tools. I have worked in a variety of materials – sandstone, travertine, granite and even wood. My most recent pieces have been carved from Kansas limestone, Carrara marble and Afyon marble.

The inspiration for the organization of my workshop comes from my study of the chisel traces left on the unfinished works by Michaelangelo, which reveal the types of tools used by the greatest master in working with stone.
